Got a little time the last few evening to work on the conveyor belt project. To remind people, the plan is to make alphabet blocks in santa's toyshop. The first conveyor will have a rough cut of wood on it, it will then disappear into a box. Out the other end of the box will be a wooden cube that disappears into a tube. The tube will run down to the third conveyor where out pops a finished alphabet block. The block will go up the incline and "drop" into santa's sack. Running everything will be one of santa's helpers, a dressed up moose.

I reused the Altima wiper motor from the failed coffin project and the PWM speed controller to control the speed. Each "conveyor" has a roller chain (35P) to turn the "belt" (a piece of canvas attached to the chain). The two two conveyors will go left to right, the bottom one goes from right to left (took a little thinking to get that to work). All three conveyors are tied together in the rear by one long chain. By doing it this way I could ensure that all three belts will stay in sync and there will be no slippage or getting out of whack. The handle you see running will be "turned" by the moose to make it look like he is running everything.

I really hope to get phase one of this project done this year. Phase one is it working bare minimum. Phase two will be to add a Pic uC to send when a block "goes into" the hidden area and turn on a "saw blade" or shake the tube. It will then sense when the block "pops out" the other end and turn it off. I would also like a power meter above the moose that is an analog meter "showing" how much voltage he is generating. A drifting DAC with some moving average on the PIC could be used for that.

I am open to suggestions as well.

Very Cool. Quite a project. I would like to do some sort of moving props down the road. Have fun with this.

Thanks guys. It didn't quite make it for getting outside this year, but as soon as the season is over I want to hit it hard again! I hope to finish this project up as well as maybe a candy cane dispenser one.

Well, now that the basement finishing project is mostly....finished, ive been plugging away here and there at the conveyor project.

I've reworked some of the bracing, mounted in the motor controller, attached the moose (Harris is his name) to the display, and reworked the armeture that Harris is turning. I am pretty happy with the mechanics of this thing at this point.

By the end of the weekend I want to have the coneyors belts themselves sewn up and installed.

Next up is some pizzaz for when the block dispears between conveyor 1/2 and 2/3. I will probably be trying to not use a micro this time and take advantage of some 555 timers, magnets, and reed switch. More on all of that as it fleshes out...

Thanks so much, me too ;). I am hoping to keep pounding away on this so I can get moving on some of the other projects. This prop was so long in the making (from initial idea), I would just like to move on :).

I should have probably changed the name of this thread since it now includes ALL the videos of the conveyor belt project, but oh well https://diychristmas.org/vb1/images/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif.

Here is the final product:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJPTyc0NDJI

So far she is running smooth. It will be interesting to see how she does over the course of the season.

Thanks uke. It was a labor of love (just because I dragged my feet on it throughout ~3 years working on it in spurts. But I am pretty happy with the final product. Hopefully it will hold up.
