There really is a lot that goes into getting that show ready.. then there is all the editing.. sometimes that cracks me up..
Which season and episode were you on? Link?

Do you still enjoy watching The Great Christmas Light Fight or have you tuned it out?
No..... but I will admit I watched it last night and DID like one display .... the one the owner called his "redneck Christmas display"
It was the one where his family and himself restored OLD ( some animated ) Christmas display items .
Now , THAT was enjoyable and yet , they only showed it for a few seconds, but .. the guy with all the pixels and copied cutouts of Disney characters , they showed that for seemed like forever. Did NOT enjoy that display AT ALL .
Like anything , ( even here on the forum ) everything is about MORE , MORE , MORE... newer , newer , newer .
What ever happened to an old fashioned Christmas ?
You watch 3/4 of those displays on that show and you would think you are in Vegas or something .
I apologize if I am stepping on toes here , but , I still believe in incandescents , Vixen 2.1 , and I use 10 - XMUS Ren 16's , 8 - Frank K's Ren 24's and I have 4 Olsen 595's with all external SSR's ( all AC ) in PVC pipe that I use for my display . NOT ONE pixel . ( the Olsens are used for backup )

So, I have always enjoyed the show and like you, I watched the show go from the "ordinary people" who do create displays for many reasons, to where we are today. II, and I believe we all, would enjoy going back to the roots and learning about the setup, the inspiration of the project, and the many years of joy it has brought to both the creators and the community - enough of the sob stories, and over the top fire/rescue and live nativity scenes that only occur for the show.

Well, my show is synced to music and high tech. But I make all the props myself. I aim for clever rather than quantity of lights. Yet everytime they've got someone doing the computer controlled shows like we make here, it's someone who throws a year's salary into pixels and covers the whole house. Which I personally call Griswold on... Just because you can make a matrix that covers your roof, doesn't make it Christmasy to me. It's not the tools but how you make them into a christmas show that impresses me, imho.

That said, the public wants more lights and brighter, brighter, brighter. So... I guess that's the future of the hobby. Me and mine will just relax here in the past with our mere 3K channels and be happy.

Here Here! There is such a thing as too many! Over-the-top is too much. It's like eating an Oreo cookie with 12x the white filling. Smaller is definitely better in my opinion too.

I like the show overall, but take it for what it is. Still see some cool stuff, and there were two displays this year where the guys were either DIY'ing all the props or refurbishing old props, and that was their entire display. Those were my personal favorites. One guy even tore up his front yard to install sidewalks so people wouldn't trip while visiting... too funny. The 4 million light display was very cool. Love the river running through the trees. It's still just one "prop" though, although using a crap load of lights, in what I thought was tasteful.

I DVR the show. My wife and I still watch. Mostly to see blowmolds. I also look for interesting hand crafted items. We live about 25 minutes from Clifton Mill (4 million and 1 lights). Clifton Mill definitely attracts a crowd. GCLF didn't mention that there is a $10/person admission fee.
lights, blow molds, and cut outs; no blinky-flashy yet
