New to xlights please help

Hey all! I?m new to the game. I got an experience light genius 16 controller and I?m having trouble connecting it to xlights. I?m really trying for a Ethernet connected directly to computer as this year is just one controller. My problem is with proper ip address input I?m unable to get xlights and controller to talk. I?m not very good with computer ip stuff but the programming of xlights is decent. Any help or suggestions would be great.

If you are direct connected, each IP just needs to be in the same subnet
IE
PC 192.168.50.1/255.255.255.0
controller 192.168.50.2/255.255.255.0
 
For the first try, it should be as simple as plugging in the device to your router and hitting "Discover". I wouldn't even mess with trying a static IP.
