is it possible to mix pics with diagnostic code with pics that do not have the diagnostic code? I am populating my ren 64 xc with the chips and am getting them from two different people. Is the combination of pics a bad thing? will it still work?

A pic with the diagnostic code does not pass the signal on.
You can have regular redard PICs before it but no chip after the diagnostic will receive a signal.

If I no longer count channels... but instead say I have over 12 universes... Is that too many
I haven't tried it, but you could probably connect a diagnostic PIC in "parallel" with a regular PIC. That is, run the output from the previous PIC to the input on both the diagnostic PIC and through a jumper to the next non-diagnostic PIC that comes after it in the chain. You'd be short 8 channels at the end of the Ren 64, but at least the signal would get passed along to what follows the diagnostic PIC by hopping over it.

Short answer No & Yes
The diagnostic firmware is not for running sequences from vixen. It is to test the circut board.
It is designed to put in the first PIC postition for whatever board you are building.
in this WIKI link go to the bottom of the page and it will describe how to use the firmware.
I can't imagine that anyone supplying you parts would give you multiple PIC's with diagnostic firmware. When I sold some parts I recomended getting one with diagnostic and the rest with PWM.
You may be confused and getting some programmed with PWM and some with Non PWM firmware. I think that would work, it just would not dim LED's on the non PWM channels?
This is one more example of why anyone spending the money to build a Renard should also spend the money for a PIC programmer.

HA, somebody else is putting up my lights this year.
