Thanks for the advice. I've googled pulling GPIO0 high and got too much conflicting info. What method would you suggest to do this if you don't mind sharing please.
GPIO 0 is special. On the LoLin it is driven by a decoded RTS/DTR signal and is used to put the device into and out of programming mode. Of all of the GPIO pins, it should be your last choice to use for some other purpose.
2022 - Not sure yet. At least two new songs.
2021 New Tune-to sign. New 40x27 matrix at the house. Retiring the Strip based matrix. Updating some of the old window frames to the new house. Adding two new songs.
2020 Full sized show reworked for the new location. Only adding (famous last words) 13 RBLs that I finally got converted to using pixels
2019 - Just moved into a new home (yet another change of plans). Will be dim but not dark. Too much to do at the new place to leave time for a show. Dim show (3000 pixels) had regular visits most nights.

The LoLin has a built in pullup. You just need to make sure you have nothing connected to GPIO 0. I like to say Never have anything connected to it but that is not technically true. If you want to make sure the pullup is working then add a 10K ohm resistor from GPIO 0 to the 3.3v pin

update: I could only get one of these boards working. No big deal as I'll grab a couple of new ones and see how they go. Also Martin, what's the best way to make sure I'm running the latest version?
You install it from this dist.zip file. I keep this dist updated with the latest build at all times.

And for those of you that have fish tanks and want to drive LED lights over the tank, here is a version of V4 that has a fishtank mode in input 2. Your tank can do winky blinky when the show is running and then keep the fish calm with timed light changes.

Thanks for your help on this Martin, I can confirm it was my boards at fault. I bought 2 new D1 minis esp8266 and 2 D1mini32 Dev boards and flashed all of them without any troubles or the need to pull pins hi or low.
