So, I got a chance to go over and freeze me fingers off trying to take a good pic of these pixels on the neighbor's house. Why is it always -20 windchill when you want to take a good close up of something and they never come out great?

Well, I've been trying to upload a 2.63 MB JPG pic and for some reason it won't let me. Please advise I feel a little dumb right now...

Use the windows picture editor and crop out everything except the black chip. We want to see the information on the top of the chip.

2022 - Not sure yet. At least two new songs.
2021 New Tune-to sign. New 40x27 matrix at the house. Retiring the Strip based matrix. Updating some of the old window frames to the new house. Adding two new songs.
2020 Full sized show reworked for the new location. Only adding (famous last words) 13 RBLs that I finally got converted to using pixels
2019 - Just moved into a new home (yet another change of plans). Will be dim but not dark. Too much to do at the new place to leave time for a show. Dim show (3000 pixels) had regular visits most nights.

Take a look and see what you think.

Pics are not the best, but I think you can read what is needed.

That black square to the right of the led is what we want to see. The writing on the board is manufacturers data. It is the IC that matters. It controls the protocol.

Does your neighbor have a spare string? You could try to connect it to an FPP or ESPixelStick and try a few different pixel protocols. As long as you apply only 5V to the string you wont do it any harm sending it a protocol it does not understand. At this point I am betting the WS2811 protocol will work.

No, I first asked him if he had any extras so I didn't have to freeze my fingers off trying to get a pic and he said no because they would come back out to replace them for the next 5 years. I wanted to buy some, but at the price they get for them it's kind of spendy for a test run. Don't mind spending the money to buy them but only if I know they work.

Can you send me a link for one of these FPP or ESPixelSticks you're talking about? Like I said before I'm very green to all of this pixel language.

Just so you know...this a DIY forum and so not everything is beautifully laid out the way a commercial product might be. So some things you have to DO IT YOURSELF (like a game show audience would yell it)! This forum is great resource when you run into issues.

This is the official ESPixelstick hardware: https://www.amazon.com/ESPixelStick-...dp/B072XT1V77/ Hard to come by as it has been impacted by the shortages of electronics and high demand. You can use -almost- any ESP8266 or ESP32 device and get your WS2811 pixels to dance. @MartinMueller2003 is helping the development of the firmware and uses a LoLin ESP32 d1 mini format board with SDCard holder for his development work. The sdCard has significant benefits in running your show.

The firmware (software that runs on the ESP device and accepts incoming data and sends it in the correct format to your lights) is on Github https://github.com/forkineye/ESPixelStick

FPP is also software. It runs on a Raspberry Pi computer. They are also hard to find right now but a very popular small computer that can be used as a show player and/or a controller for two strings of 800 pixels. Start here (free login suggested to get started) http://falconchristmas.com/forum/ind...c,15171.0.html

If you are serious about doing some DIY lighting, join australian christmas light forum https://auschristmaslighting.com/ and download their 101 manual and read it through a few times. It will give you good start on the things we talk about here.

If you like the permanent part of the mounting, consider https://www.permatrack.us/shop/permatrack/ which is a more DIY version of the track. Looks like they are out of stock too! Otherwise there are other ways to do "permanent" mounting.

BTW, the patent printed on the backside is about how those pixels are attached and how they get mounted. Interesting...so much prior art. I am surprised they thought it was a patentable idea. And as is usual in patents, generic language that could be used against other similar ideas.

Just a note on the FPP software. It runs on Raspberry PI, Beagle Bone Black (and a few other single board computers). On a PI it has the ability to drive hundreds of thousands of pixels. When you add a daughterboard (sometimes called a PI Hat, PI Cape or PI Expansion board) you can get output ports directly driven by the PI making it a standalone show. When using FPP software on the PI, you generally get two output ports and each output port can drive ~800 pixels.
