If you use the spiral effect and change the rotation to the ramp up then down ( upside down V) it will give you a twist to one side, then one twist to the other side. Then you can copy and paste it ad many times as you want to keep the effect going as long as you want. You can also adjust the spacing, or the timing to make it twist, or wipe, as fast or as slow as you want it to go. That's how they did it in xLights on that sequence but as you have discovered there are many ways to get the same look.
