    Default Master/remote configuration question

    Hello all,

we currently have 2x F16v3, 1x F16v4, 1x F4v3, and several Pi/Picap systems setup throughout our building running various displays.
Right now, besides the Pi/Picaps, all show data is being sent from a central computer (running Vixen) via a dedicated subnet on our wired network.
We are finally getting around to converting the system to master/remote so we can remove the truckloads of e.131 data from the network. There is obvious data flow issues at times.

I have a fairly decent handle on how to do this, but I wanted to confirm a few things....

    1) It's unclear to me whether or not I can use the F16v3's as a remote as they sit. Can this be done by simply using the V3's SD card slot and setting it to be a remote, or do I need to do this through a Pi? It seems this was a new feature of the v4's, but I want to confirm.

    2) Is there any science to which of our devices I should use as the master? As far as what I've read, it really doesn't matter?

    Thanks,

    Steve

I also have a few F16V3s and have spent a few days playing with them. I have found that I need to manually put the files on the SD card. When I tried to have the master push the sequence files to the F16 as a remote player the files did not arrive. Also, it looks like the files are supposed to be in a specific directory on the SD card. Found that by accident. But a formatted SD card in the F16V3 and told it to be a show player. Rebooted. Took the card out and it had an empty sequences directory on it.

All of this is just observations. I have not yet gotten an F16V3 to play a file from the SD card. I just set up my show FPP on 5.1.1 and have gotten a master and a slave FPP to work together. I will expand that to include the F16V3 tomorrow.

2021 New Tune-to sign. New 40x27 matrix at the house. Retiring the Strip based matrix. Updating some of the old window frames to the new house. Adding two new songs.
2020 Full sized show reworked for the new location. Only adding (famous last words) 13 RBLs that I finally got converted to using pixels
2019 - Just moved into a new home (yet another change of plans). Will be dim but not dark. Too much to do at the new place to leave time for a show. Dim show (3000 pixels) had regular visits most nights.

Just ran into this page on the Falcon Christmas site. It looks like the there are some nasty limitations that will cause me to continue to co-locate an RPI FPP with my F16s to limit network traffic.
