Post ESPixelstick NEW Release v3.1 Questions

I saw that the ESPixelstick v3.1 was released yesterday. I had not tried any of the pre-release Travis builds. I have been operating on v3.0 So I have updated one of my ESP-01s to play with and have a couple of questions about Pixel use.

    1. Wireless Setup - what is the Client Timeout for?

    2. Device Setup - what is the Group Size for?

    3. Effects - what is the range for Idle Timeout?
what is the range for Brightness?

    Thanks.
    Kevin

    Thanks.
    1) Client timeout is the timeout before the ESPixelStick will attempt to re-connect (if failed to connect) or fall-back to AP mode if you have AP fallback enabled.
    2) Group size is for treating groups of pixels as a single node. For instance, say you have a prop with six pixels in it that you want to treat as one. You'd set group size to 6 then within your sequencing software, you would treat it as a single pixel.
    3) Idle timeout is the timeout (after no show data is received) to start idle effects if enabled
    4) Brightness goes from 0.0 to 1.0.

So client timeout would allow the ESP to reconnect to the AP if it drops off for some reason? I have had some occurrences where the power blipped during the day and ESPs weren’t working so I had to unplug the ESPixelPop to get them to reconnect.

The release notes for 3.1 say "You can upgrade from 3.0 using the EFU files included in the release archive, however if you're on one of the newer Travis dev builds, it'll probably fail."

Does this mean that if we already have upgraded to, e.g., the Dec 4, 2019 Travis build Over The Air, then to get 3.1 we need to flash it over the serial port rather than OTA?

(I see that it also says ESPixelsStick 3.0 is Wemos based, gonna look for that news next)

You can try doing the OTA, but chances are it will fail. This is due to the ways SPIFFS is handled and initialized in the newer versions of the Arduino ESP8266 core. Since the Travis builds are auto-compiled and not functionally tested, this wasn't caught until prepping for the 3.1 release. Many people haven't been able to do OTA upgrades with the newer Travis releases because of this. If yours is working though, there's chance it may work for you. If not, don't be surprised.

I have the first run of v3.0 hardware on hand and it will be available soon. In a nutshell, here's what's changed:
    - WemOS based (auto-programming support added v3.1 release, so no mucking around with serial dongles and manually entering flash mode)
    - Updated power supply section (still supports 5V-24V, beefier components)
    - Reverse polarity input protection
    - Differential outputs for hardware DMX support
    - Better ESD protection on the outputs
    - Higher quality connector (traditional euro-style 3.5mm)
    - MicroSD slot (not yet supported, target for v4.0 firmware)
    - Due to the decision to add hardware DMX and MicroSD support, plans to add support for clocked pixels has been removed (peripheral conflict with MicroSD support)

Hi Shelby, sounds good. Did a quick check of the stock and will now be eagerly awaiting the V4.0 firmware.

Note: Please don't assume that that these are the parts needed for V4.0 firmware – I’m guessing most of the parts will be supplied on any boards released by Shelby.
I like you will have to wait and see.
