    Default Network questions

Not sure if this post is in the right place, if not and a moderator wants to move it around, thats great.

In my research of all things christmas lights, I found a good vid on networks from the Aussie seminars. On there he says that you can run the show from a laptop, not connected to any router. (just a switch for multiple E682's)

I tried this last night, and got no lights. So, my question is:

do I have to change all the IP addresses to a show network even though I am not connected to a router?

I have my two E682's as unicast with 192.168.1.207 and 192.168.1.208. Both with a subnet as 255.255.255.0

If I do have to change, do I have to change the IP of the Laptop as well, or can I just change the IP addresses in Vixen 3?? ( I have no idea how to change the Laptop IP)

I have a Pi, but at the moment cannot figure out how to get the Falcon Pi player set up. I am running out of time, and have no real issues running the show off the laptop. I can get Pi working in Dec.

    Thanks
    Ray

your laptop is probably setup to use dhcp to get an IP
since you are not connected to a DHCP server you get a random'ish MS IP.
just change your laptop ip to a static IP maybe 192.168.1.1

    navigate as follows assuming windows:
    control panel
    network and internet
    network and sharing center
    change adapter settings
right click on your adapter for your NIC and select properties
in the list presented, find Internet Protocol Version 4, select it, and hit properties
change to the radio button that says "use the following IP address.
set ip 192.168.1.100 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, gateway doesnt matter for this task.

You should then be able to click start, type cmd and hit enter to launch a command prompt
type ping 192.168.1.207 and if you get replies with your controller on, you're set.

Remember, when you set this it will no longer pull a DHCP address on your main network later when you want to reattach it so repeat these steps and set it back to "obtain an IP address automatically" to get the device to work on your main network again.
