Default Resizing video clips to fit matrix

I'm building a new P5 matrix and am curious whether others resize video clips to match the resolution of the matrix. For example, a 5x8 P5 matrix would have a resolution of 320x256 pixels. Is there any benefit to re-sizing video clips to match that resolution? Obviously file size, but is there a visible difference if a higher resolution is used?

If you pre-convert videos to your matrix size the your sequencer will render faster as it has less work to do.

I was reading back through some information and found this thread. I tried a couple search queries and didn't get the answers I was looking for -- was there a tutorial video made on how this is accomplished for optimum resolution across various matrix sizes?

I didn’t find one, but I can’t remember if I was looking for a how-to. I planned to use video editing software to size it to the exact-ish resolution of the matrix.

Yeah, VLC will let you load up a video file and resize it, either to preset sizes or specific #s of pixels high x wide. Preset means you can go with Apple/Ipod, Android, 720p, 1080p, etc...

I did that to one of my files and it reduced the file size from 25 MB down to 9 MB (I went from 1080p to 160x256 pixels, which is the size of my matrix, 4W x 5H). I then inserted that new file into the sequence and played it and it looks okay on the computer - I haven't yet had a chance to upload it to the Pi and the BBB and then play it. I guess I was just hoping that there was a "how-to" video on the xlights site or elsewhere.

I suppose I can just try it out and see how it looks, but I was hoping someone that has done this could give me a confirmation that you should be doing this and not trying to just copy a 1080p video over to your matrix, no matter what size it is in order to make your video look good on it.

I resized and dropped it on a matrix, and it worked in xLights. I haven’t output it to a physical matrix either. I’m still building the big one.
