    Default WS2811/WS2812 Extender board...

    Hey folks,

I'm in the design phase for some old-school (though-hole) LED ornament decorations; they are going to be single-color LEDs but I at least wanted the capability to turn them on and off and dim them.

Since my controllers speak WS2812, I ended up building a little board I'm calling the WS2811 expander. You talk to it using the WS2812 protocol, and it has 3 separate outputs that can drive whatever you want. It supports either 5v or 12V loads, and can handle 4 amps @ 12V across all three loads (ie red, green, and blue) or 8 amps @ 12 V across a single load. I thought that since I found it useful, it might be useful to others, so I made a few up for sale.

More information including a demo video (with boring light bulbs) here.

    Hey.

Can you share the schematic and the view of this module's board?

    Sure.

    Here's the schematic:

    And here's the board view:

Very cool! I was thinking of design something similar. You just saved me the hassle. Thank you.

I've signed up for stock notification on Tindie - would be ideal for converting some of my floods, thanks!

Cool. I'd suggest ordering a single board to verify that it will work correctly for you before doing more.

Iím sure they will work great for driving 12v single colour floods. I also have some RGB strips which this would control nicely!

We think alike! Last January I needed a similar board to drive some dumb RGB signs so I made a PixelSSR so they could be spliced into a normal WS2811 feed... I used PC817 optos and KSC2328AYBU transistors instead of MOSFETs, but they can handle plenty of juice, too. I like your design though! Good job!

Even though the DIGWDF Store has been closed for more than a year, it's still awesome!
User guides, documentation and other files are still free and available for downloading.

Thanks. I went with the MOSFETS partly because they can handle a lot more current and partly because they'll have quite a bit less voltage drop than the bipolars.
