    Default ESP-01 to RS485 Renard SS24 Question

I have two SS24s I picked up used. I want to try using them via WiFi with something like sporadic's ESPixelStick + RS485 / DMX Hack (found on the other site). The questions I have are on powering the ESPixelStick and RS485 adapter circuit from the SS24s 5V supply. Looking around the Web it looks like the ESP-01 can draw and average of 100 to 200 mA with spikes up to 500 mA during WiFi transmissions.

    1) Is the SS24 5V supply beefy enough to handle this extra load? The data sheet says the 5V regulator handles up to 1.5A but I don't know how much is used by the SS24 board.

    2) On the SS24 schematic, pins 7 & 8 of the two RJ45 connectors (J1 & J2) are just tied together but don't appear to go to anything else on the board. If I wanted to provide 5V, GND to and data from the ESPixelStick + RS485 / DMX Hack via the J2 input connector, could I jumper 5V to J2-7&8 and use that pair to power the ESPixelStick? The cable will be very short and I will not be daisy chaining other controllers downstream via the J1 connector. It will be left unused.

Any issues in doing this? Thanks!

Sweet! Thanks for the link, I hadn't come across that yet. That's an even better idea! No need for the RS485 adapter. So much to learn............

It will run the pixelstick firmware and the hardware is all open source if you feel comfortable you can get oshpark to make the PCB and get the BOM from digikey.

    Have fun!

I tried the low-ball approach but ended up going with Bill Porter/madsci1016's RenardESP. It's a very easy build. I had problems because I tried to skip the quote/unquote very expensive DIP adapter and ribbon cable. I should have just paid the price and charged ahead. After I built it as Bill intended, I had zero problems.

I did make one change. The RenardESP uses back-leveled ESPixelStick firmware (nothing wrong with it, just back-leveled). The newest firmware has a GPIO pin change that makes it incompatible with the RenardESP. I cut and trace and soldered a jumper on the RenardESP and now it's compatible with the latest firmware.

Details are HERE. You may find the rest of the thread useful as well.

Hacking the hardware allows me to use one code base across all my ESP01 solutions (ESPixelSticks, RenardESP's and DIGWDF ESP-RS485/DMX Serial Adapters).

Another kit option can be found here You would either have to use Bill's version of the ESPixelStick code or hack the board as mentioned previously to change the output to the GPIO1 pin. Also you would need to change the the Female J1 header socket for either Header pins on top of the board or just straight wire to the proper pads for connecting to the SS24

Not an SS24, but same concept

    Thanks for sharing this.
I will have to update the board design to include this fix in case anyone else wants this board in the future.

Credit to where credit is due. I'm not the original author. I stand on the shoulders of others. I know I reference MichiganLights in my old thread but I think he and I both originally saw it elsewhere. I just tried to neaten it up a little.

I like the way Dave designed his boards, he had a set of jumpers that allowed you to choose which pin you wanted to use for the output.

Thanks for all the info! I actually have 2 Renard Plus ESPWiFI Pixel Controllers and 20 of ukewarrior's ESPixel Pops Tiny. Both are working great as pixel controllers and work with the latest forkineye ESPixelStick firmware. I was going to try to re-purpose one of those for use with the SS24 in serial mode for Renard. Will take your advice to use the DIP header to wire them into U5 on the SS24 board. Thanks again!
