Sounds like you have a good idea on this. You can lay them out together and zip tie. For my super strings, i braided them together, probably more time consuming then needed, and a pain when trying to replace which fortunately isn't very often. At the top, i double backed the end plugs making a loop and zip tied them there. On the bigger mega tree, i took a piece of wire (coat hanger) and made a hook that went through the loop. This allowed me to make custom length hooks to get into my eyelets on the tree topper. For the two smaller mega trees i used "S" hooks and pinched the bottom closed around the wires.

I had my kids help me make mine one year. I use superstrands everywhere I don't have pixels pretty much. Easiest way is to make sure they are all the same length. I had on kid hold one end of Red, Green, and White strands and another kid held the other end tight and I came down and ran a piece of black electrical tape around about every 3-4 feet, and that's it. I taped mine because when I did it I had about 50 rolls of tape and no zip ties at the time. Still holding up just fine still. For my Mega Tree I did add a zip tie to the top that hangs on the hook for added strength as some of the strands started breaking the tape under the weight after a couple years of use.

This video starts out with my mega tree. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5i2F72IyBY

I use a mega tree hook topper from 3G Lighting http://store.3glightingcreations.com...ank-up-24-peg/

At the bottom, the strands get plugged into my controllers that hang on the pole.
