Default My mega tree is screwy... need a sanity check on my setup

So first thanks in advanced for the help This is my first try at this and to be honest I'm surprised I got this far with out any help.

So here is what I have.. Megatree set up with 17 strings (I know an odd number but that is all I could fit, I might be able to squeeze in one more to make it even) so again 17 string with 50 pixels each WS2811. Running sandevices 682 in multicast and Vixen 3. I have it set up in 6 groups ( Each group runs 3 string , except the last one which runs 2 ) The four are on Universe 1-1 to 1-4 and the last 2 on Universe 2 2-1 to 2-2. Each group starts on the bottom of the tree and runs up 50 pixels, then down 50 and up 50. Settings on the 682 are set as follows : # of pixels 150 / GROUPS 4 on Universe 1 and 2 on Universe 2. Zig Zag is set to every 50 pixels.

So when running something like text to scroll across the top 1/3 rd of my tree it appears to be just a jumble lights, some light on top some light on the bottom. So tried to reveres groups 2 and 4 with no luck. I know its a sequence thing trying to get all the groups to work together but I can't figure it out after 2 weeks of messing with settings on the board.

Is there a better in setting this up?
The reason I have 3 strings per channel is that it was my understanding that each channel on the board could safely handle about 170 pixels.
Can I use Unicast and run all strings on 1 channel with power injection? Is it as simple as checking the Unicast block?

I live in the San Diego CA area if anyone wants to stop bye and check it out and get FREE BEER!!

    Thanks everybody!!

So I thought it was the way I had my groups set, Example group 1 started on the bottom went up 50 pixels to the top, down 50 to the bottom and up 50 to complete the group, the 2nd group would start on the bottom and do the same thing. So as you can see the 4th string would start going up instead of down because the 3rd string in the first group ended on the top. I though by clicking on the reverse setting on the board for the 2nd group it would start the 4th string from the top going down. This did not work so I physically changed the 2nd group to start from the top and still no joy. I'm checking this by using the scrolling text feature and still the lights are not correct. Anybody have any ideas at all?

Can you post a picture of your 682 configuration page?

havent used zigzag so im not sure about this but.. normally when you use "group" it makes every output put out the same thing. try without groups maybe

I had issues with my configuration a few years back, took me a while to sort it out.

you want NO incremental breaks in pixel count across your display and controller setup

    1. configure e682
    2. configure Vixen3 hardware controller
    3. configure element
    4. configure adjustable preview

    I'm assuming you have;
    150 pixels connected to e682 plug 1-1
    150 pixels connected to e682 plug 1-2
    150 pixels connected to e682 plug 1-3
    150 pixels connected to e682 plug 1-4
    150 pixels connected to e682 plug 2-1
    100 pixels connected to e682 plug 2-2

    1. configure e682 so it knows;
how many pixels are on each plug<- IMPORTANT if you run multiple e682's
    what type
    what colour step(rgb,brg,gbr) etc

*your universe setup should look like the Vixen setup below (2. configure Vixen3 hardware controller)
    universe 1
    start channel 1
    size -510

    universe 2
    start channel 511
    size 510

    etc, etc

do not configure e682 to zig-zag, Let Vixen3 handle that

    2. configure Vixen3 hardware controller
    17 strings x50 pixels x3(rgb) = 2550 channels

    universe 1
    start channel 1
    size 510

    universe 2
    start channel 511
    size 510

    universe 3
    start channel 1021
    size 510

    universe 4
    start channel 1531
    size 510

    universe 5
    start channel 2041
    size 510

    (no need for universe 6)

    3. configure element
    for your mega tree elements,
reverse the channel assignments when setting up the outputs to reflect your zigzag.
    string 1 normal order
    string 2 reversed order
    string 3 normal order

    4. configure adjustable preview to the output channels (no need to reverse order)

***(I did this, took weeks to sort it out, DON'T DO THIS)
if you did this, you will get the jumble you described.

    e682 configured to zigzag
    group 1 = 150 rgb pixels
    group 2 = 150 rgb pixels
    group 3 = 150 rgb pixels
    group 4 = 150 rgb pixels
    group 5 = 150 rgb pixels
    group 6 = 100 rgb pixels

    e682 configured for universes
    universe 1
    start channel 1
    size 450
    universe 2
    start channel 1
    size 450
    universe 3
    start channel 1
    size 450
    universe 4
    start channel 1
    size 450
    universe 5
    start channel 1
    size 450
    universe 6
    start channel 1
    size 100

visually it will appear correct in test mode, but in application its really cloning channels 1-450 on each string of your megatree so text or other effects will not display correctly
    Cheers!

This really is a zigzag problem. Each of those strings that go from top to bottom need to be reversed (just the top to bottom). You can do it in Vixen on the patching screen or (if your controller supports it) on the controller. Just keep in mind that it is a select set of pixels that need to be reversed.

FYI: Vixen assumes all strings go one way when it renders an effect. That is why you need to correct at patch time or controller time to reflect how your lights are really arraigned.

bill as Martin said in vixen is where yo wanna setup your zig zag not in controller you would do this in the display setup page patch your 1st string normal then the 2nd string which goes from top to bottom needs to be reverse you havea little check box to do this next to the element side then the 3rd string is normal patch and then 4th string reverse and so on any string the is going from top to bottom should be reversed

Looks like you have old firmware. Your start and end channels are not correct. The controller web setup should looks like this.

The start address for 2-1 to 2-4 should be 271 universe 4. Disregard my last screen shot post. Too many pixels. This one is for 850.
