Question Anyone run a DIY firewall?

    Hello all,

I have been wondering if anyone else runs a DIY firewall on their network. (pfSense, Smoothwall, IPCop, etc) I have been running IPCop for over 10 years but updates are very rare. Which is not necessarily a bad thing... except for when features stop working.

So I am considering building a new one on newer hardware and I was wondering if anyone had recommendations on what is good these days?

    Thanks in advance!

I use to run pfsense, but sold the build to a buddy of mine. I never got around building or buying another setup. There are so much you can do with pfsense if you like to tinker with settings. One of the reasons I never built another
one due to the fact I spent too much time tinkering with the settings and not doing more important things.

    Hahaha! True that.

Curious what you replaced it with though?

Take a look at IPFire (https://www.ipfire.org/). While I don't use it full time I do have it running in a test environment on my home network in a VM and I like it. I added a cheap 4 port Ethernet card from ebay to it so I have plenty of networks to play with. Not hard to set up and it has a lot of features. I just haven't worked out moving the thing into place full time. Been busy with other stuff. Mainly I wanted to just go full out and run snort on my network just because. That and set up OpenVPN so I have easy access remotely into my show network.

I run the free home Sophos UTM on a homemade VM server. I added a few NICs, and have it run a few different things. I'm in the process of switching to Sophos XG on the same box.

I use IPFire in my classroom, it is a fork of IPCop and gets regular updates.
