    All,

Found this on hackaday, from my read it is a patent troll trying it on but these things sometime get twisted.

I hope this isn't the new patent fight arena. I could see this devolving quickly and I don't want to be soldering LEDs on tiny pieces of plastic to make my own.

The detail of the patent requiring a clock is VERY important. It's like you patenting a car that runs on Gas. Any car running on propane, would not be covered by the patent. And any light that isn't self contained and doesn't use a clock, isn't covered on this.

There is also the question of prior art. I'm pretty sure the 2812 was on the market before 2009, claiming that the part which came to market before you is infringing on your patent, is silly. Suppose I got a patent on doorknobs, so many years late. The fact there is prior art (doorknobs already are invented) would make my patent claim void. So if the 2812 was being sold before 2009, APA would lose its patent.

More importantly, do you really think some Chinese company is going to pay royalties to these guys?

Going a step further, Phillips has patents on using PWM for color mixing LEDs which both these chips and many others do.

I believe those CK patents have run out or will run out in something like 2020 for the last one if I remember right..
