Default Connect USB-RS485/DMX adapter to Pixels!

The engineers were screwing around last week and decided to see what might happen if they connected DIGWDF's USB-RS485/DMX adapter to a strip of WS2811 12volt pixels. So they tried this...

** Adapter power ground and pixel strip ground to the power supply's ground
    ** Adapter power +V and pixel strip +V to the 12vdc power supply's +V.
** Adapter D+ output to the pixel strip's data input line.
** ESP module loaded with the pixel version of Shelby's ESPixelStick firmware

SHAZAM, CAPTAIN MARVEL!!! As it turns out, this little gizmo is like a magical, universal adapter -- it works like a charm!!! It works by using the adapter's 75176 chip as a voltage level shifter from the ESP's 3.3v output to a more normal 5vdc with good, strong current to put plenty of signal down the data wire. Only the D+ output from the 75176 chip is used; the D- is unconnected. Of course, the voltage that powers the adapter must be the same as the voltage needed for the pixels, but that's no biggie....

So now, for peanuts you can pick up a kit with all thru-hole parts and connect it to a Renard controller, any DMX controller, a LOR controller or even directly to pixels!

Just to be clear, you are using DMX capable hardware, but the software is NOT outputting DMX on the tx line. It is outputting a pixel data stream through the DMX compliant hardware.

There is no USB here and this trick only works on the ESP based adapter. Still a great adaptation.

2019 - Just moved into a new home (yet another change of plans). Will be dim but not dark. Too much to do at the new place to leave time for a show.

Correct. Since the adapter is ESP-based only, only the pixel version of ESPixelStick firmware, which outputs a signal designed for pixels, will work. Outputting DMX or Renard, for example, to a pixel string or strip will not work with pixels, but they will work for a DMX or Renard controller respectfully.
