So technically I could go into adobe illustrator or photoshop, create any image I wanted and add the correct phonemes and put this on a mega tree or matrix, correct

I do 95 % of my animations outside HLS then import them as a .png sequence onto a Pixel Plane channel.

Its the simplest method of custom sequencing there is .

I have only used HLS . Could not wrap my head around Papagayo several years back , though I did watch an interesting PaPagayo tutorial for Adobe After Effects back then . Still it seemed clunky and cumbersome and would have taken weeks to get anything accomplished.

Well, I haven't imported external phonemes to use and have created my own in the "Animation tab". When there go to the "Assign mouth positions to channels" and once you have defined things you right click on the word position you want to insert and a box pops up and you can draw your mouth....to include colors...

If you haven't seen it Joe takes you through it in this video at around the 20 minute point....

Don't let the pixilization of the drawing box fool you.....the final result on my matrix looks really good IMO....

I have yet to see a facial animation program the equals Joe's application for ease of use . I think I have looked at almost all of them now and each seems to put a user through many hoops to produce any form of results .
