Default Put XBee controllers on your Wi-Fi network

The DIGWDF engineers were dinging around in the lab recently and they threw this together: it's a Ren-W SMA with an ESP8266 module and an XBee radio all inside a TA-200 case. This gizmo is essentially a retransmitter which allows you to control your XBee network via Wi-Fi without changing your XBee-based controllers in any way, shape or form. This prototype also has an optional jack for an external antenna so you can use an XBee radio with the U.FL connector if you like.

And for fun, they stuck a 120vac - 5vdc power buck on it so it can be easily relocated anywhere in your yard where you have AC power.

How it works: The data is received by the ESP module, which is configured in Renard serial mode at 57600 baud. The XBee radio is of course, also set to 57600 baud. Since both devices are designed for 3.3vdc, the output from the ESP is fed directly into the input pin of the XBee and it retransmits the data out.

Works slick and there's virtually no lag.

Just got my ham license and this repeater is a cool idea!

Is the esp sketch something like the espixelstick code or?

How is the esp wired to the RenW? Serial output pin I assume? Would be good to breath new life into my old battery pack powered Mini RenLSD’s that I used to run on the kids strollers.

The ESP-01 module is running Shelby's 3.0rc3 firmware, in Renard Serial mode at 57600 baud to match the XBee's speed, and it's mounted on an ESP Snap-In so it can plug into the Ren-W board. The Ren-W SMA board was originally designed to be a repeater and by connecting a couple headers with a short wire (or Dupont cable) you can reroute the received data from the ESP to the outbound pin of the XBee, which then transmits the data immediately. The retransmission delay is so short it's undetectable except by diagnostic hardware; visually you can't notice a thing.
