most rgb pixel is sensitive to power and hot plugging is not recommended. it is quite easy to damage a pixel doing that.
do you have voltage at the end of the string?
get a straight pin and stick it through a jumper wire. stab it into the data line beyond the first pixel. do you get lights?

Test the lights on a different (known working) controller (I use a PI hat or a PixelStick).
Verify the data line is actually outputting information.

    Many thanks martin and mikecrebs.
Luckily I had ordered some new lights which arrived today, so I have connected them to the arduino 5v and they work perfectly. So I then assumed muct be first node on original lights and cut it off, connected the lights again and they worked perfectly.

So can you just please confirm that if I follow the steps above, namely v- / ground connected from arduino to psu and lights to psu, and with v+ To psu, the lights should now Work and I can string some together?

Thanks again.....great help for a newbie!
    Besty

Glad to see you have it working. Yes, you have it. Your strings positive wire to PSU V+, the strings negative wire to PSU V- and the Arduino's ground to PSU V-.
