FYI: MPASM can talk to the PicKit directly. You do not need to export or import.
Device family is PIC16, not 18 and I am pretty sure you should only have three empty rows in the back. FYI: Any 1.8v setting is not going to work for the programmer on the 688 parts. They can run that low but need a higher voltage to program.
2020 Full sized show reworked for the new location. Only adding (famous last words) 13 RBLs that I finally got converted to using pixels
2019 - Just moved into a new home (yet another change of plans). Will be dim but not dark. Too much to do at the new place to leave time for a show. Dim show (3000 pixels) had regular visits most nights.

Click "All Families". That gets you the entire list. Scroll to the 16f688 device. Nothing will work properly if you do not get the device set properly.

Doesn't look like the PICkit3 can be used on your PIC16F688. Appears this requires the later "MPLAB ICD 3" programming device.
In Lights Therapy
OK. I now have installed MPLAB X IDE and I do see the All Families option and on the device list, I selected PIC16F688.
In the Power option, I have checked Power Target Circuit from Tool and it is set to 5v.
I attache the PIC adapter and click on read and I get the errors in the image.

I used picKit3 on 8.92 and higher versions of the IDE

The PIC16F688 is the standard PIC for the SS series controllers and many other Renard controllers. It can be programed w/ the PICkit2 (I have a clone - works fine) or the PICkit3
