Default 12awg speaker wire ok for power???

I am doing a MOSFET upgrade to an Anet A8 3D printer I got for the kids over Christmas. And some are calling for 12 AWG wire to run from the 12v PSU to the MOSFET then to the Hot Bed. I have been trying to locate 12 AWG stranded zip (Red/Black) 2-wire, but I keep coming up with Speaker Wire. Is it ok to use Speaker wire that is 12 AWG?? Should I just use the Green SPT-2 wire, that I run for my power to SS24, lights, etc.? Would regular lamp cord work? The largest gauge wire I have is 16 awg stranded.

I think "speaker wire" is usually a higher strand count and possibly more expensive. You can get plenty of 12awg wire from your local hardware store. If the spec is 12awg, then use 12awg.

You could use 16ga but double it as two parallel runs. This gives close to 12 ga wire.

I buy my red and black zip cord for power from PowerWerx. I use it for power from batteries or power supplies to 2 way radio systems pulling from 12 - 25 amps. Works great. I use both 10 gauge and 12 gauge. It is not cheap.

I found some cheaper red/black zip cord that is marketed as speaker cable out of a Florida vendor on Ebay. I ordered some 12 and 10 gauge to give it a try. Once it arrived I realized it was copper plated wire, and the 10 gauge was closer to an american 12 gauge size. I have been using it on short 6 foot or less runs with no problem. However I have not put it to a full current test to measure voltage drop issues. It has nowhere near the strand count as the PowerWerx brand.

Don't forget your local auto parts stores. They have a better selection of stranded wire than my local hardware store.

Search "landscape wire 12/2". Locally available at Lowes, Home Depot, others. It will be black with ribs instead of black & red.

I just bought some of this to see how good it is... 12/2, "outdoor rated", 250ft for $40.

Yeah yeah - you get what you pay for ... so I'll test it before I use it ;)
