    Default Anti-Virus software preference

My Avast anti-virus expires today and I am wondering what people like or would recommend. I would need it to cover at least two computers.

Xenia, I have been using AVG FREE for the last 6 years and has saved by butt quite a few times, just make sure during the installation you select the "free" version at the bottom of the screen that has the check list.

Buying antivirus software is an absolute waste of $$ all it does is slow down your machine .

There are many free virus scan tools that suffice

such as Malware byte , Spybot S&D .

    Cheers

AVG is the worst, both technically and morally. But don't take my word, a quick search of Slashdot news for AVG yields the follow titles in order:

"AVG Proudly Announces It Will Sell Your Browsing History"
"AVG, McAfee, Kaspersky Antiviruses All Had a Common Bug"
"AVG Forces Chrome Extension On Users"
"AVG Fakes User Agent, Floods the Internet"
    "AVG Announces Invisibility Glasses"
"AVG 2011 Update Causes Widespread Problems For 64-Bit "
    "AVG Update Breaks iTunes"
"AVG Virus Scanner Removes Critical Windows File"

I have had issues maintaining computers with AVG and now I'll automatically remove it from any computer I find it on.

I prefer Avast. They software runs well and finds most things, they pay their employees to right blog posts on security and to analysis weak systems, they are kinda like the google mentality of antivirus companies. Using the same test as above:

"Why Avast Won't Show Source Code To the Government"
"Avast Buys 20 Used Phones, Recovers 40,000 Deleted" (One of their blog posts showing the issues with weak security)
"Avast Drops iYogi Support Over Pushy Scare Tactics"

I concur with the "waste of $$" comment. There are so many attack vectors today, the anti-virus applications, as a whole, are nearly pointless anymore. Just use Windows Defender. It comes with most flavors of Windows now, and is not significantly worse than anything you would shell out money for.

I used to use AVG and like it just fine... Was annoying every couple years when you had to download the newest update and make sure you got the free version.

Now I just use Windows Defender and it does the job, and it come with windows so more convenient as well.

I have used Norton for several years but with new Win 10 system I am using Bitdefender Internet Security 2016 - seems to be resource friendly and working great for the past couple of months.

I am a mostly retired PC support specialist. I tell my clients they can use anything they like as long as they use something. The biggest problem is PEBCAK - problem exists between chair and keyboard. As for me I have used Windows Security Essentials, AVG, Avast, and others. It is free and does not nag you like some of the other free versions. I no longer recommend AVG just due to the many nag screens/emails that keep trying to get you to use the paid version although that is the price you pay for using a free version. I am not a fan of Norton or McAfee. Not saying they are bad, but they are bloated with way to much stuff that most folks have no need for and do not even know what those functions are.

I've been using Kaspersky for a couple years - no complaints (but not free either). I don't like AVG - always seemed to slow down my system.
