Thread: Light-O-Rama DMX

    Default Light-O-Rama DMX

So now that LOR supports DMX, does this mean I can run Renard/Lynx/LOR together in the same universe using Vixen? Or can I use it vise-versa? DIY on LOR, LOR on DIY?

I have some LOR controllers that I was going to sell, but maybe I'll keep them now.

On the LOR website there is a list detailing which controllers will run DMX (most of them) and what firmware is required for it to work. There is also a diagram to detail how to create an adapter to connect the RJ45 connectors to 3 pin connectors for DMX.

Currently, you can control both LOR and any DIY together. To control both with LOR you will need to have the iDMX adapter and the DIY hardware will have to be DMX compatable. Or... if you're using Vix to control everything... your spare LOR boards can be easily converted to work with DMX and added to your fleet.

I have not tested this yet. Mainly because I haven't picked up the iDMX adapter yet. There is an annual sale, and I hadn't settled on a platform until after it was over. It is considerably more expensive than a DMX dongle. So expensive that I personally wouldn't buy it if it wasn't on sale. However, there is no reason they will not work together. DMX is the common ground.

    Thank Jeff,

I had a feeling you'd be the one to answer the question. So I can add those LOR controllers to my fleet... I already have a iDMX (I know it was pricey) had I'd known about the DMX dongle before that I'd not. I could always pawn it later. I think I am going to test the DIY/LOR and see if it works. If so, I just added 192 channels to my DIY setup.

Sounds like I need to decide on whether I want to go LOR or Vix for sequencing this year. Since the prior shows are already in LOR i'd be a lot less work. (I've only started a bit in Vixen)

I wonder what others on here would think LOR software or Vixen? I like the fact the Vixen runs just about anything. Wide array of hardware options.

I concur... however only a few here know about the other 'non-DIY' sequencer. This really isn't the place to discuss it. Look to my sig as I've already started a thread there about not jumping ship. rlilly asked me to describe some of the differences. I listed a few of the things that make life easier for me.

So far I have only discussed this issue with three people interested in combining the two. I have quite a bit of DIY hardware built. Along with an entire display of LOR with 224 channels and an additional 144 DIO. If I add all the DIY hardware using an iDMX I could have over 500 dimmable..........

Now I just have to get back out in the shop and back to work on those blasted, time consuming, boring to make, finger severing, callous raising, mini light eating, channel gobbling leaping arches....

Joneslights - the DMX adapter board I created also has an input adapter for a 3 pin XLR style connector.

I now have a LOR controller running on Vixen.... I have just tested it and it appears to work fine. Here are the pinouts needed to make a cable.

    Dongle LOR
    WH/OR (1) Blue (4)
    Orange (2) WH/Blue (5)
