Had the same idea, originally was going to take obelisk cages like this one and do them....

    http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000HHQ6DQ/...=I2U86UPWPGJFT

but for the money actually just bought some of the cheap incadescent ones from walmart the two pack with the 3' and 4' and struck smart pixels on it. Took 100 for each 4' and 81 for each 3'

I'll post a picture of them running when it gets dark tonight, just my 2 cents.

And a plus, the can flatten down flat into a box and store real easy!!

Indeed I'd love to see them! That was a similar plan I had, although I haven't decided on pixels or conventional strings yet. If I do conventional, I still want to convert the lights to the AC LED strands I typically use to keep a consistent look (and because they use WAAAAY less power of course).

I haven't looked at one of these pre-built spiral trees up close but I noticed on some of them it looked like the lights are wrapped somehow so I'll need to figure that out.

By the way thanks for providing the light counts! I tend to order my conventional strands via bulk orders just like I do with pixels so helps to know ahead of time the lengths needed

Here's a quick vid of them

It's really close to the above vid just used bullet style pixels

    Default mini trees spiral

I wonder if James could make something like this out of thick ABS. He might even be able to put in the pixel holes.

I retrofitted a set of 3', 4', and 6' spiral trees with square pixels pointed up and have had positive feedback on their look. I have one more 6' to do and have considered buying more.

What a bummer to hear about the spiral veggie cage. Oh well.

Creativedesign, I like the video and it reminded me that I had a box those exact same trees stored away from last year. Does anyone know if Walmart still sells these?

If not, I'm wondering if I can use them as a template to make my own like this:

Only use my Walmart trees as a template for the wire to get a consistent, clean look. Then, with the wire frame done, attach pixel mounting strips to hold pixels:

I think it's doable, just more work than the veggie spiral cage. But, not sure how well that would work at the top where it would get to be a tight space.

Creativedesign, any pics up close of how your pixels are mounted?

Here is how I used some square nodes I had laying around.

I was thinking the same thing when I hung up with the guy. Haven't seen James posting for a while.

Other than the look, I was looking at storage. To be able to collapse them down into what should be almost "flat" would be wonderful. I need to make about 5 dozen of them. Storage of that many tomato cage units would be less than desirable.

The biggest fun and would apply to bending own metal is spacing, on those trees it was string with plastic clips that kept spacing that had to be installed while stringing or weight was to much and would make them look odd and hang low but just took a little finagling to get to look right

I was also able to cram 6 nodes into the star toppers, one in the center and 1 in each point of the star.
