    Default Unicast---Multicast

    Hi all....

If I want to change from multicast to unicast.....is there something I need to do in HLS or does HLS just send out to a universe? Or is the unicast/multicast assignment only done on the controllers?

Both - the controller has to be configured to support multicast or unicast as well as the sequencer. The main difference is you only deal with universe numbers in multicast. Based on the universe number a specific multicast address is used - always. If you use unicast, it uses the combination of the universe number AND the IP of the controller.

So how do you come up what that combination? Where do you put it in HLS?

In the 'Select Output and Compile for Show' option under Output. When you select the transport type of 'Ethernet' then select the protocol, there is a field to enter your unicast IP address.

OK....now what does a unicast IP address look like? What format....I've never seen one. I understand it's supposed to include the controller IP AND a universe number....how do you show both of those in the format that pops up in the protocol area? Or is it just the Controller IP number?

    Thanks

It's the IP address of your controller - you didn't say what kind but guessing maybe an E68x. Whatever static IP you used for that is what you put in HLS.

Thanks Brian.....the post up above said it's a combination of the IP and the universe? I'm confused as usual>>>>LOL

First - some definitions may help - the names unicast and multicast give away their intention. Unicast means one to one - in this case your sequencer of choice talks directly to one controller and one only. But you also need to tell that controller which universe to act upon since you could have lots of them in a big setup. Multicast means one to many so your sequencer will basically send it out to all controllers out there regardless of their IP address. The multicast address actually contains the universe number within the address itself. Since all controllers on the network see the same thing, it's up to it to figure out which universe(s) of data it should use.

The benefit to using multicast is that you can have multiple controllers receiving and acting upon the same data without any action on the part of the sequencer. It's slightly easier (but not really that much) to set up. The problem with it is that it does not do well over some networks and certainly not wireless networks (in general). And of course with the E68x controllers you go from 7 universe to 12 universe for 0 cost...

OK....that's the concept....now let me see if I get this.... Let's say I have 5 universes on 1 controller..... When I got to configure the output those 5 universes would have the same IP address in the protocol 'box' for all 5 universes?
