Default VAST all in one V-FMT212R FM Transmitter with RDS

I thought I would start a thread for information about this unit.

It is for the new VAST FM transmitter that has RDS capability built in.

This new unit is a departure due to the fact it is not a stand alone FM transmitter.
This transmitter requires connection to a PC to drive the station selection, fm music and RDS information.

Here is a link to the VAST site for info:

    Software information about this device

VAST supplies a software application to drive this device.
You can download it and play with it without a device at this download location:
    http://www.vastint.com/download/V-FM..._Software.html

I thought I would light up everyones imagination with screen shots of the App.
These are screens from my PC running the App.
Look at all the knobs and dials you can turn with this device !
There are five screen shots below, one for each configuration tab.
The final screen shows the EDIT drop down where you burn your configuration into the device eeprom

A little bit of wisdom (I hope)...

There is no 'field' work done with this device to reference.

If it were me, I would not have my show depend on this brand new device this late in the season.
If it were me, I would use a totally trusty and proven FM02 this year as my main device.
But, I would pick one of these up if you want to run RDS.
Remember, this unit is roughly twice the cost of the FM02.

It is a neat unit. But kind of pricey in my opinion considering it can't be used sand-alone. If it did have an audio port for optional stand alone operation it would be even better!

I don't know i like the simplicity of just a usb cord.

Also for people concerned about a vixen plugin, worst case we can probably use something like this, and have a workable solution fairly quick.

Oh it's great for a transmitter that is only used for lightshows or other audio coming from a computer, don't get me wrong but I like to hook mine to my TV in the summer occasionally so I can work outside and listen to sports with my favorite announcers.

It's still looks like a great unit.

Well, we are testing this unit now. I am not 100% convinced it something we can use just yet. That why is not on my store just yet.

So far, not having tested one, the biggest issue I see is distance from the computer. We know that can be handled but at a price.

I'm assuming that in connects into Windows sound system so it will output anything from your computer. Hopefully you can select it separately from the main windows sound so sequencing programs could send to it without coming out of the main speakers.

Need to know how to talk to the RDS? Can you send through a serial port as well as an API? If you can what do the packets look like, can we control everything through a serial connection?

On a side note: Does anyone ever set the traffic flag so when someone gets close to your house their radio will auto switch to your frequency?

Given the fact this is a 100wm unit, I don't think USB cable distance is an issue.
Go ahead and connect it close to your show PC.
It seems to me the extra milliwattage of the transmitter can be consumed with a longer antenna cable, which is probably a good thing.

FWIW, I just wanted to say "thanks" to the VAST people for reading our site.
