If you need a large number you may do better to buy a lot from ebay yourself and sell off any extras you may have.

What's the difference between the XBee-Pro-Digi-XBP24-AWI-080 and the standard *-001 version? Are they compatible?

Basically the same. Same product with different numbers for different markets.

There is a lot of 24 on Ebay now. Starting price is $216.00 with $5.35 shipping. That works out to $9.22 each and they are from the same lot that I sold.
