I would think that a layer of that tinting film they use on automobile windows might make it more discernible in the daytime if the leds are close enough to the front transparent, film-covered part of the enclosure and the film is of the light-to-medium darkness. If would diminish the over all brightness, but I'd think at night that might not matter, but could help during the day.
