I suggest a Pythagorean calc on the modeler page. Not everyone knows how to calculate the height of the tree from the length of the hypotenuse and base diameter. I noticed that some of the tree heights are longer than the hypotenuse.

I am already doing this because many people were getting the dimension wrong.

I take the length of your strand, say a 200" 50 pixel string.

If you build your tree BOT_TO_TOP, then the hypotenuse is 200". I then assume the tree has a 76 degree angle at the top of teh tree. (This would be a 20' tree with a 5'' radius base..)

I then show you what dimensions i think you should have for h1 and d1. If my guess and your actual is within 25% , i color my guess green.

I can almost build the trees just by knowing the legth of one string.

In the above example, btw, i would use 100" if you say you are doing UP/DOWN Next. In other words you are folding the string.

    thanks

Hi Sean, I finally got a Mega-tree target to match what I want. I'm sure it was just me but I was having trouble getting the gif to match what I'm going to build. So now that I've got the gif correct (25 pixels tall [half a 50ct string] by 20 strings wide half tree) by folding my string by 2, I'm questioning if I can use nutcracker to determine the bottom diameter of my Mega-tree. I noticed the pixel spacing isn't used anymore so I'm not sure if it would be correct anyway. Can you shed any light onto this part of target building?

This was an aha moment for me. I dont need to know your spacing. If you want to make your tree 1' tall and 30 ' diameter or 30' high and 1" diameter. All that mattered for my models is that i have spacing that i know about. Using my x,y,z spacing i can apply models to my tree.

so, what this means is i take your strings and pixels and apply what i think is a normal looking tree. All effects get generated to those x,y,z dimensions. In my case i build the tree with a diameter of half the height and set 3" spacing between pixels.

Now, you take your tree and build it any way you want with these caveats:

You must fold the strings as you told me.
you must have told me the accurate pixel count per string.
you need to wrap the strands ccw as that is how i build the models.
If building a half mega tree, i assume the first strands is on the left and is numbered #1.

Build your tree and the effects should look the same as the gif.

O.K. my test target has 2 folds.
    50ct per string
Wrap CCW? Does this mean string #1 goes up, comes down on the left side. String 2 goes up, comes down between 2 and 1. String 3 goes up, comes down between 3 and 2. ect. to 10 strings 180 degrees half tree. Correct to build?

As we don't have the half tree target anymore, I have to build a full size target. 20 strings of 50ct folded in two. I use 180 degree view to get my half tree gif. But when I download the file it will be for a 20 string full tree rather than a 10 string half tree. Correct? How do I import this into Vixen 2.1?

if you have 10 strings of 50 pixels, and you want a final half tree only, then do this:

Build the target as 20 strings of 50 pixels folded. This would give you 40 strands of 25 pixels each.

When creating effects, select 180 degrees for the window. I will only produce strings 1-10 (or strands 1-20) for vixen, lor. I only output to your sequencer what is in the window.
