An interesting affect occurs at very high frequencies. Plastic always has some small capacitance (less than 1pF) and at these very high frequencies, that small amount of capacitance can de-tune the antenna which will drop your dB gain.

For what it's worth, I ran with a pro (RPSMA type) for my transmitter in a second story window this past season. I had a 9db antenna on it. On the recieving side the majority where standard xbee radios with 1" whip antennas and a couple of the pros with 5db antennas on them. All radios, and antennas, where inside CG enclosures except the transmitting one and I didn't have any major issues. There were some occasional misfires but these were as common on the pros with 5db antennas on them as they were on the built in whips so Im chalking that up radio interference from another source and I was just too lazy to their up all of the xbee's and try reprogramming them to differ PAN IDs. Oh, max distance between tx and rx was probably 60-80 feet. As with everything though, this is my personal experience and YMMV.

Maybe. If the antenna is inside the enclosure, then they're not perfect line-of-sight; something is in the way.

The problem with wireless communication is that there are no guarantees. There could be something nearby that uses a similar frequency that garbles communication, too. It will *probably* work but....
