Converter/Filter AC-DC Dongle Thing
Hi All,
New here and thought I would just glance off og the forum and have been here for hours now. Nice forum.
The reason I was out searching is we have had several of these LED trees that are multi-color and some LED's twinkle. We bought 3 of them last year and love them but it appears as though they are no longer made. Here is a link for the ones Walmart sold.

Anyway, they worked great up to the last second when we put them away at the end of last season. Thi year, one of them pulled a direct line short. What? Died while being stored?
Anyway, I determined a green, cigar shaped, injection molded thing I will call a dongle had a direct primary short. One end gets 120vac and the other is powering the LED's.
I cant find anything at all on this dongle so decided to remove the vinyl, exposing an MB6S full wave bridge rectifier and a 2.2uf 250vdc electrolytic capacitor... that is all. I figured out why it shorted. They had installed the Negative lead of the cap to the Positive output of the full wave bridge. How this cap ran in reverse polarity for even one season is beyond me. The cap shorted, taking out the bridge rectifier and showed a shorted supply input.
So, I am going to build another rectifier/filter. Does anyone know if all it does is rectify 120vac to DC then parallel filter the output through this 2.2uf 250vdc capacitor?
This tree claims to host 200 LED's.
Thanks for any help provided in convincing me it is really this easy to repair.

Re: Converter/Filter AC-DC Dongle Thing
Why not just get new parts and replace the old ones? They would cost around $1.00 from mouser.com, although shipping will be several times higher. The only real caveat here is that you need to get the old parts off the board without damaging it.
If the bridge and cap are the only parts on the 'dongle', then what you seem to be proposing would also work.

Thanks Phil. Mouser, I see, has these components. I desoldered the old parts and have a clean board now. Ordering in the morning.
I just find it strange that these were the only components inside that hunk of vinyl. I sure hope this gets the tree lit again.

Found parts locally for a total of about $4 and the tree is in the yard and showing off. All that is in that assembly is a full wave bridge and a filter cap. RTV sealed inside of shrink tube.

Re: Converter/Filter AC-DC Dongle Thing
fascinating. I just found a MB6S in a C9 bulb a coworker has, which another coworker twisted until it was barely working so I go to take it apart. It also has a resistor marked 514 (looked up is 510K ohms) and a 561 (looked up is 560 ohms), a capacitor 0. 33 J. 63 and 2 5mm wide angel LEDs soldered one on top of the other. A short wire connects to the metal side of the socket and a solid wire connects to the tip of the bulb socket. Still trying to figure out the circuit. The board is marked SFW701 07/03/11
