Default Vixen Edit profile with Excel

    Hello,

I have a profile setup in Vixen 2.5 that I would like to edit in excel 2010. When I open it it opens as a XML file it throws a "File truncated" error, but opens anyway, however, whatever format i save in and rename to .pro crashes vixen. Any Suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Scoutcamper

The file format is being changed by Excel.

I use Notepad to edit my profiles. Even still, Windows asks which program you want to use to open the file. This is because Windows doesn't know which program to use to open a .pro file. Even after you select Notepad Windows askes if you want to always use this program to open the file. Say no here or Windows will change the file icon to the Notepad icon and change the file format so that you'll have a problem with Vixen as well. When you save you have to save as an ASC file versus a .txt file or you run into the same problem. Not sure as I have no experience with doing it in Excel but sounds like Excel is changing the file format and that is the source of the problem with Vixen post edit.

Question Re: New Channel order with Excel?

The actual issue/question is, we would like to use Excel to sort the channels by color for easier sequencing. There are several posts on doing this in Excel via the xml format but we're unable to save as xml from Excel. If saved in another format and then change the extension to .pro, Vixen doesn't recognize it. We have both Excel 2010 and Excel 2007.

Bottom line, what is the quick and easy way to create a new channel order without moving 1 channel at a time in Vixen? We have over 700 channels this year and are way behind. Hoping to get at least 1 song up tonight!

There are 2 types of reordering - display order and physical channel order. For sequencing, just changing the display order would be sufficient. That is done by adding a comma-separated list of channel index values - use the Vixen UI to add a new channel display order and then look at the .vix or .pro file to see the format and the tag name.

If you do need the other type of reordering and you rearrange the actual channel order within the .vix or .pro file, you may also need to apply the same changes to the Adjustable Preview bitmaps - try a couple of channels and verify whether your Adjustable Preview still works correctly (if you use it).

For the issue about Vixen no longer recognizing the file, double-check that Excel is not adding a .xls or .xlsx file extension. Display of the file extension is turned off in Windows unless you turn it on, so the extra file extension at the end might be hidden.

Yes you can drag and drop to get to the correct order.

The secret is to double click between channels to set an insertion point.
Now hold the control key, and when you click on a channel it will move to the insertion point.

Really quick to reorder a lot of channels that way.

If I no longer count channels... but instead say I have over 12 universes... Is that too many

I use a program called Textpad. It loads large profiles much faster than notepad. Plus it can show the line numbers which helps me keep track of where I have made changes.

Here is a tip for anybody experimenting with this.... Make backups of everything EVERY time, before making a change. I create folders and use the current date [including the year] in the folder name. Backups only take a couple minutes but can save you hours or days down the road. Space is not an issue either.

Another tip, backup your stuff on to another computer or memory stick. You have a lot of time invested in these files.

    Another vote for TextPad.
My favourite feature is the ability to do search and replace in columns of text

THAT'S THE BEST TIP EVER....................... (at least for now) I need to do a lot of re-shuffling and I always did this 1by1.

+1 on Textpad and +1 on backups. It is far too easy to mess up a profile and have your whole day come to a grinding halt.

Maybe I should write a channel sort order creator.
