    Default pickit question

OK, I apologize as I know this has been posted lots, but I wan't to be sure as it takes forever to get anything shipped up here to Canada and I don't wan't to go through the hassle twice.

Is this the pickit I need?

    Thanks for the help,

    Rob

That looks like the real deal, however, if you want something a bit less expensive I can highly recommend this vendor/product:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/iCP02-USB-Mi...0&cmd=ViewItem

Been using this for about a year now- it works really well- it is a Pickit 2 "clone" and runs with the Pickit programming software or from mplab.

    Actually I got this:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/iCA03-USB-PI...item415a0590cb

to get the ZIF programming socket that will handle just about any DIP package

That doesn't come with a board to map the ICSP header to the pins on the PIC though. A simple board will need to be (and can be) made for that. Here's a thread about that: http://doityourselfchristmas.com/for...Hardware-Setup

I have the pickit2 from j1sys and highly recommend it.

    EDIT: another link:

Thats why I edited my message and added the link to the kit WITH the socket which costs HALF as much as the J1sys one for the priviledge of having the "Microchip" logo on it. I'd rather spend the $25 on LEDs rather than a logo...

I personally don't think it is "just a logo". It is a Microchip product made to flash their products. Over the years here, I have seen the "clones" be hit and miss for functioning properly. In your case, you got a good one, others have not been so lucky.

To the OP, yes that is exactly what you need for the Renard board PICs.

And I can vouch for the quality and customer service that j1sys provides. Ed happens to pop in here every so often, and is the designer of the ECG-DMXRen8 DIY board, along with some commercial products that do E1.31-DMX and Pixels.

Its not just a logo. Look through PicKit threads. 7 out of 10 times when someone is having trouble, it is with a "Clone. Not to mention J1Sys has been a great supporter of this site and the users here. The J1Sys package is a much nicer package. IMO, there's no doubt its worth the $25. I also don't believe the clones can be used as Logic Analyzer.

THIS is the one I got - it has been a fabulous programmer. In fact, I have bought a lot of stuff from Sure and never had anything even approaching a problem. Your mileage (of course) may vary.

You may never use the debug part, but it comes with a better adapter. If you get into programming other PICs you have more options without having to build another board - and its free, quick shipping too! It usually ends up in Vancouver in a few days, then sits there for a week or two before you get it.
