Thread: PWM Firmware with incans?

    Default PWM Firmware with incans?

    Hello all,

Super noob here, I have been following this forum for almost two years now and am still confused...but i am slowly getting there. Anyway, I was looking at a new COOP for a REN24SS or two and it says the PIC's will be programmed with the PWM firmware. From what I understand the PWM firmware is needed to control LED lights, I however am running all traditional incan. mini-lights, will the PWM firmware work with my lights or will I have to clear the PIC's and re-program them....slight issue since I still dont understand that process or have the tools to do it.

    Thank You,

    Chris

You can use PWM with both incans and LEDs with no problems. The only advantage to non-PWM is that the controller will use less power from the power supply which is not really a major issue with the current Renard controllers.

PWM has more to do with dimming than LEDs vs Incan so you should be fine.

Also, the PWM firmware is useful in cases where the AC load is not heavy enough to keep the Triacs latched (such as a relay coil). OTOH, an alternate work-around for that problem is to put a C7 or other small bulb in parallel with the relay, if you don't want to use the PWM firmware.

All the SS boards were designed with PWM use in mind. Power supply issues with the board are non-existent. You will have less issues (if any) using PWM firmware with your lights also. ;)
