I watched that same show! I liked alot of what they were doing but some of it to me was boring. I like what these guys are doing on here. Never in my life would have thought I would be addicted to this but in the last week I have purchased about 15000 lights and with what I have I am probably around 18000 or so. I have built a dozen snowflakes out of rebar and 5 minitrees. I want to make 5 more mini trees. I wish it would warm up here so I can build my mega tree! How many lights do most people use for a mega tree? I plan on using 2250 on 12 channels. 11 channels for 2000 lights and 1 for the 50 light star. If I can convince the woman to let me I would like to add about 4000 more lights to the mega tree so I can alternate colors. and will need 22 more channels. WOW Bob Addiction is the word.

Hey Bill, Newbie here. Just found the site a few days ago and have been doing a lot of reading. How did you come to your final decision on what type of a system (Boards etc.) to get?

Good question. I actually made a final deceision last night as to what I would like to run. I have decided on the following.

    1. A grinch using the DMX to Grinch converter to control on/off lights such as LED strobes.

    2. A Lynx Freestyle (Currently in Beta) to control lights that need dimming.

But if you have read through this thread you will see that I have bought/been given PCB's for several other controllers and yes I have/did. This is because I felt the need to get some of these as the Co-Op's for some are currently happening and it also gives me the ability to use one of the other controllers in case I should have a need. This way I will already have it and not have to worry about were to get the PCB from should the need arise.

My primary reason is that I wanted everything to be controlled via DMX was 1. It is a lighting standard. 2. The DMX dongle for the PC plugs into the USB port which makes for an easier setup since I do not have to worry about lpt port or serial port issues. 3. I have purchased some RGB pixels that are controlled via DMX so having a DMX setup was a logical choice for me.

Now I'm not saying that lpt or serial is bad they are not it's just that I wanted DMX and it had the added plus of running from USB. You make make your own decision as what is best for your hardware/light setup.

I would sugget the following for anyone new:

    1. Get a game plan of what you would like to do together
    2. Read Read Read the forum posts and the wiki
    3. Visit the chat room and ask questions I have seen most of the DIYC products inventors in this room and they have always been happy to answer questions.
    4. After you have knowledge of each system make your decision on what you would like to use. A lot of first timers will usually start with a Grinch it is a basic on/off type controller and it will help you get your feet wet. You can then move to a more advanced setup later.

I will be watching this one close, looks like you are walking down almost the same path as I am.

I have also thought that I should do a blog. There are many free webpages out there, as well as blog pages. I have used BLOGSPOT (google) when I was doing tournament fishing (kept the sponsors happy), and have set up a blog page for my christmas light display. Google also offers a free webpage, it's very basic but very funtional. You don't get a short and sweet domain name, unless you go out and buy one and link your page to it. I also began doing a myspace page and using that to blog and stuff, but honestly....no offense to anyone that uses it....myspace is a haven for spammers, pervs and sicko-s. Not what I want to subject my family and any other family's to.

But as for journaling from beginning to end, this is great!!
