    Default 10mm LEDS in Triks?

Anybody try 10mm LEDs in a triks board? If so, how'd it turn out? Photos?

I'm not sure if that would work? I think the LEDTriks controller uses the A6276/A6279 Allegro chips as constant current drivers/sources. Can they be configured for 100/300mA to drive those big boys?

Not talking about the big, high-power jobs, just the larger-footprint versions of the leds that still draw about 20-30ma. What I'm curious about is the visibility of a larger LED vs a 5mm LED. My thought is that if the electrical specs are the same, a larger diameter LED might be easier to see as there'd be less space between them. Maybe it's a moot point...

Maybe even using a 5mm "Straw hat" type LED would have a similar effect.
The straw hat LED's have a wider light dispersion pattern than a regular one, so it may be a close comparison to the 10mm variety.

That being said, I'd like to see a 10mm panel as well ;)

Is there a current detailed troubleshooting & construction guide for this 10mm panel available?? Otherwise I'm not going to try one...

AFAIK, there isn't a 10mm version of the Triks panel -- unless 10mm LEDs will fit on the current panel, anyway. I'm talking about something new...

I think TimW was ribbing you there Dirkster...

Perhaps a complete redesign of the LEDTriks (controllers, panels, etc) is in order since some of the chips are harder to get these days and to allow for other features like RGB and/or dimming (maybe at least 4 levels or something simple). I still think the LEDTriks is a useful display item - especially for dynamic messages. Just thinking out loud...

Yes... but only a gentle ribbing . I just don't want to lose the innovation of DIYC in a storm of mandated 'document publishing' requirements!!

I'm wondering if the proliferation of pixels will kind of meet the need... its what they were originally designed to do by the looks... The hardware for this is almost available... would just need a software solution...

I got the rib -- gave me a good yuck, too!!! But you can bet your kokabonk that if I put something out, it'll have plenty of documentation to support it for no other reason than with the proper documentation, there are far fewer support issues that arise.

I AM working on a prototype though... just noodling a few ideas out there to see what sticks to the wall... that's how you tell if the spaghetti is done, you know... throw it at the wall and if it sticks, it's done...

(now watch -- I'll get flamed by all those with either Italian heritage or those with diplomas from the Julia Child or Martha Stewart fan clubs...)

mmm Pasta with Plaster... Martha would be proud!

I'm hanging on to my kokabonk for now... I actually agree with you on the value of documentation . (Its the rationale behind the 'mandatory' bit I'm wondering about)

Anyway, enough about that... on the 10mm led front I always thought Peggy2 was pretty neat
