You could do the lexan or safety glass or whatever you want to call it that you buy in many sizes from home depot/lowes.. It's the plastic glass stuff.. You could order a roll of transparent vinyl to cover them, say at:
    http://www.beacongraphics.com/
    15" x 10 yards ... $62.75
    24" x 10 yards ... $100.00
    30" x 10 yards ... $112.90
    48" x 10 yards ... $199.50

(longer lengths too. They just cost more..)
my List: (to do, done, ideas...)
    • Renard 24 SS - 5 built and running(2010), 5 to build for 2011
    • LED icicles all hacked into short 3-4' sections for chasing, mounted on pvc pipe. 18 channels of these
    • 4 arches assembled and painted, 3 waiting for lights and 1 lit up! - now a 2011 project
    • 2 - Renard24lv partially built(2011 project)
    • 7 portaflood pcbs on hand, 1 enclosure on hand, 1200 LED's on hand(2011 project)

    I think I found those:

I'm assuming you are saying you bought them on close-out after christmas. These look pretty good. Thanks for posting. I just might pay full-price so they are "done". I have two half-completed wire-mesh one's in my basement. They look great, but they are going to cost close to these.

I went the cheap route. A visit or 2 every now and then to my local goodwill or savers used goods store and found, in the kids toys section, the plastic cases for Kinects (plastic building kits for kids) will light up great. Just toss in a 100 ct clear string. After several visits over the summer I found seven.

I'd like to place some presents/gifts under my Mega Tree and have them illuminated from the inside (Sequenced of course!)

Most commercial products I've seen are extremely "cheap" but very expensive..

Anyone have any suggestions on how to create some? PVC? Wire-Frame?

Not looking for luminaries, more along the lines of semi-transparent boxes with bows.

The box frames themselves are not the issue.. its what to cover wire or pvc frames with.

    Suggestions?
I was also looking for something special I can decorate my tree with. I didn't know what I want clearly, but then I found a nice site, where I ordered Memory Baubles. Our big family had lost grandparents this year and my aunt last year. Certainly we still miss them all. So I decided it will be nice to have such a reminder of people no longer with us.
So now I feel like they are still here enjoying Christmas and being happy with us)) I liked this site... I'm glad I've ordered these Memory Baubles as well as personalised gifts for each member of my big nosy family. Even our Yorkshire terrier Lucky will get her new bowl))

Anyone else have the Coke "bubble bottles" this year?

Saw them at the grocery store and picked up 4. They are intended to imitate tree ornaments and are about 3" diameters..

A little RIT dye and stuff one of those CO-OP mini strobes in it.. Hang it on your Mega..

Back later, need a Coke for some reason!

I paid full price for the Big Lots gift boxes. I started making the wire cloth ones and it was way too labor intensive. Not sure when/if they will be on sale at Big Lots, but you all can get these on closeout they are excellent. I think they are worth the $25 /set I paid, but if you can get them discounted, they would be even better. The lids come off so you can actually fit them inside each other for storage.

I also had intentions of putting presents under my tree or some where in the yard. The idea I had was to use plexiglass or lexan for the outside supported by furring strips or pvc in the corners. Sand blasting the inside surface will give it the translucent/frosted look. The lights can be wound around a styrofoam ball or other ball shape then suspended from the corners of the form to hold it in the center. You could use single color or multicolor lights or the RGB/white 4 channel that I am planning.

Just putting in my two cents. Hope this helps.

Those Plexi ones will be pretty expensive and would be very brittle in my area. I'm telling you, you can't beat the Big Lots and similar ones. Even at full price. Now that I have packed them up, I am even more impressed. The smaller boxes nest inside the larger ones and the lights fit inside the big box with the two smaller ones. So I have all three with boxes, in a 15x15 package. They are Very cool and are my favorite non-DIY item

I still have 2 half-done hardware cloth ones in my shop. I'll cut the lights off and throw them away.

I do have an idea on very cheap and easy DIY ones. When I get some scrap material from a rehab project (and my shop cleaned up) I'll give it a try. I'll be stealing the design concept from the store-bought ones Just using different materials.
