Man updating the firmware on my arduino made a huge difference, now I can update on a whim, works like a charm (linux).
Have similar issues "http://www.strangeparty.com/2010/12/13/fix-your-arduino-uno-for-linux/" go there, good stuff. latest firmware/hex is Dec 4th!
But I've got the strings to do full white with a single red chase till the end, or I can do as you were setting it up to chase 2-3 nodes over a 6 node pattern, I prefer it going all the way vs having x/50 start points. Also made it just go back and forth between 2 nodes, lil police light
I see a bit of flickering on a couple of nodes on occasion but otherwise these are bright and seem to be able to do a ton of different things, it's all about imagination and well coding (I'm not quite there yet, I can hack your code, but creating it from byte zero, not quite there yet). Also found orange, so good for halloweenhahahaha
right now it's a 49 led white strand with a single red chase
Guess it's all imagination now, but as I said earlier this string will get expensive if you need an arduino for each string.
I also wonder if we upped the amperage could we negate some of the lesser "white" where it's kind of purplish or other.
Now to figure out how to use these with existing controllers. I mean vixen can't send out these pulses.. hmmm leave that to you larger melons on here
