Another question,..

I've got these 16f688's I need to program and I need to know something.
I have a pickit 2 that I programmed the ren-c 627's with but I dont have a demo board.
What is recommended to program them.
Can you make a demo board?

If you have a spare IC socket you can make a demo board of sorts, sodlering wires to the socket, or using a bread board. Phil uses that method I do believe. Let him chime in on it.

I did buy an extra socket and an IC PC board to play with but I really don't know where to start

Ignore the resistors on the board...they were added at one point when I was trying to measure current.

Anyway, the wirelist...

Pin 1 of Connector - unused
Pin 2 of Connector - Pin 12 of socket
Pin 3 of Connector - Pin 13 of socket
Pin 4 of Connector (GND) - Pin 14 of socket
Pin 5 of Connector (VCC) - Pin 1 of socket
Pin 6 of Connector (VPP) - Pin 4 of socket

This list was created by looking at the back of the (working) board shown in the photo, but it would still be useful if someone would doublecheck what I have written.

Thanks a bunch,.. posted a similar question in the Renard forum area

Since that other post is a duplicate, I deleted it.

Here is a drawing of the demo board, following Phil's guide.....

Beauty,.. I made one up,... I'll see if it works later. Now I have to continue soldering.

By the way, that board also works with PicKit1, which is what it was originally intended for.

This is what I made from your design,.. Not pretty but hopefully functional

EDIT..... very functional,... everyone should make one

Should this be split and moved to "How To's"?

Ok, so I've never programmed a PIC before, but I will when I get my REN64 built. What do you use the demo board for?

Put the unprogrammed PIC in the board and program it then move it to the Renard.

I am confused about the "In circuit" aspect of programming a PIC.

The research I have done says that you can hookup to the PIC in circuit to "flash" it and not have to remove it.

If this is the case - Why not put a connector on the Renard to allow this to be done?

Just curious....

The Ren-C board has the connector, the others don't for either space or historical reasons.
