I'm ordering the last of my parts to build my Ren64, and want to know what, if anything, has to be changed to just run RS-232? my board will be close to the computer, so distance is not a problem.
The wiki mentions RS232/485 input, but nothing about changes to any components. Does it do 232 & 485 without any changes?
Is there a how-to on assembling the Ren64? There is lots of info on it in the wiki, but no one stop for all the info it seems.

Have ren-T board and enard 64 board + all the parts.
Have leds and pics w/pwm programed.
Now what version to build?
Looking at case 2 but only have 1 renard 64.
Then this rs485??
been reading over the directions posted and am still lost

I believe that the Ren64 will handle the RS232 without additional components. I tested my Ren-T configured both ways (RS232 pass-thru and converting to RS485) and my Ren64 worked with both. As long as your Ren-T and Ren64 are close to each other and the PC then you don't need to convert.

If you only have the one Ren-T and one Ren64 then you have 2 options:
1) Ren-T built to Case 1 for RS232 data. This only will work well if your Ren-T and Ren64 are close to each other and the PC.
2) Ren-T built to Case 3 for RS485 conversion. This will give you the ability to have the Ren-T close to the PC but the Ren64 located farther away. The RS485 would allow for about 1000' in distance but I have seen some posts where people have seeing the ZC signal degrading after about 50-100'.
With either or these then you could/should build your Ren64 for ZC Alternative 1 and bring in your external power in where U1 was supposed to go.
Hopes this helps both of you. :D

Doug, in your situation, Case1 or 3 is your options. How close the controller will be to the PC and Ren T will give the best option to use. FWIW, RS485 is a better signal, so Case 3 would be best if you already have the parts to build it that way.

Thanks for the info. I am building the Ren-T/Renard64 for case 1. They will be within 3 feet of each other, so cable length is negligible.
Time to get soldering!
Thanks!

I went to my troops scout meeting last night and we all soldered SSR boards (got 32 almost built last night).
My plan was to build my Renard64 but couldn't find my board.
ot home and found under the assembly directions I printed .
Well I will be assembling today as well as cutting out material for sign.
Egads only only 22 days to get all this done. In there my LOML wants to visit Vancouver Washington (grandson) for 2 weeks.
Was going to have scout troop help put up lights on the 16th. Oh well!
