View Full Version : Question about PIC programmer

My procrastination has gotten me into another problem. I got all the parts for my Ren 64, even have it built. But I don't have the PIC programmer yet. I was planning on buying that JDM programmer from eBay, but I want this running in time for Halloween. Since the programmer ships from Canada, I'm worried it won't get here to Massachusetts in time.
Will any of the homebrew programmer designs on the net work with the 16F688? If they would, I can probably scavenge enough parts from my house and Radio Shack to build one in a day. Otherwise, I'll have to order the JDM programmer, and cross my fingers.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks!
Brian G.

Probably not close enough. I'm in Stoneham, which is about 10 miles north of Boston. A bit far from Connecticut.
Thanks,

You can order the PicKit1 from Mouser and get it by Wednesday or Thursday. I have it and it is great for what we do. Cheap also, $36.00. ;)
Mouser# 579-DV164101
This # is all you need.

Wayne,
Thanks! After a little reading, I think you might be right. None of my computers are really setup to interface with the JDM programmer. They're either running incompatible operating systems or no hardware serial port. Having USB would be great, but it looks like it has a lot of other bonuses like software and diagnostic LEDs. It's a little more money than I wanted to pay (my budget is very tight), but it looks worth the price. I'll probably place an order later tonight.
Thanks again!
Brian

If it means anything to you I think mine arrived in Texas from Canada in less than a week.

Mine arrived in less than a week (I ordered on thursday night and had it by wed of the following week) from canada. I haven't run it on a usb to serial to see if it works but it worked fine on my PC with a built in serial.

The JDM wont work with a usb 2 serial interface according to the MCU mall forums.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I decided to go with the Pickit 1. It was a bit more than I wanted to pay, but it will be shipped priority mail, so I should have it quickly.
I know a couple of you said you got the one from Canada in less than a week, but with Halloween just over a week away, I didn't want to take a risk on it. Besides, I'd rather have the few extra days to diagnose any errors in my hardware.
Thanks again everyone!

UPDATE: Just got this programmer, it is a PICKIT2 clone, programmed right in MPLAB, took 10 mins to figure it out and program the diagnostic code for my Ren64 :D
