At Lowes they had this three tree (there are other variants) system with little multicolor LED christmas bulbs on them. The system has some nice looking outdoor housings for its control system.
It plays music and has canned light display allowing some pretty impressive effects and they are all set to music.
For $283 it was fairly interesting set of multicolor LED lights.
I new devices like this would be coming from overseas pretty soon, so it looks like the first wave of fully animiated systems for the masses are on the way.
It would be interesting to see one hacked for the purpose or remote controlling it with vixen. I imagine once its main processor was removed its secondary controls might be easy to hack for use with some DMX control or something.

I didn't see that one, but Kmart & Lowes had a 6 channel preprogrammed box with music and 6 outlets to connect your own lights, $99.
Looked nice in it's weatherized case and all, for some basic blinky lights, it's ok, but you can't add music, had maybe 20 songs, speaker, so you have to play it out loud.
Looks like it's for DIY flashy blinky wannabees...:)

I have seen both of those systems. I was not very impressed with the one Zaker refers to. The one Tony is talking about was nice, the white trees and almost pastel colors of the changing balls was different.

I have seen similar ones at BJ's, Sams Club, Walmart, Home depot, and Lowes. The neat one is the three christmas trees that have the color changing ping-pong ball ornaments.

I've seen both of them. at Lowes. I think they will sell a ton of the 6 channel controllers, people after the REAL blinky flashy.

I saw the tree display last week-end at Lowes and the 6 channel light controller (you furnish the lights). The display is cool looking but with only 6 channels and no upgrade path and one external speaker...what can I say??
Our way is better.

I kind of agree with Brad. The Lowes unit at first glance look neat but within 2 minutes I was ready to kill the poor quality sound. After 4 minutes I was bored and moved on. Of course I got this way because of what we are doing and if didn't know about this site I'd probably still be standing there or perhaps looking at it in my home.
Now I will admit after seeing it I've decided to use my Renard 8 proto boards to make a tree display. I could do up to 32 channels but I'm thinking 4 strands per color each on one channel each and having white, red, green, blue, yellow for a total of 20 channels. Probably only basic fades but it could be really cool.
Time time time...all I need is some more time.....and a few more $ lol

Not only that but you can pick between 2 or 3 pre-programed sequences. Kinda blah...

I have seen the six channel one at ace and lowes, but you can't upgrade and it will play the same song and sequence every year. Plus the external speaker is not loud enough, my neighbor got it and i had to listen really closely because it was soo low.
