I found that after building out some of the Renard 16 "Simple" controllers that the space around the programming header was too tight due to larger filter caps I put in. To get around this, I found some extension cables and connector housings that worked great:

I actually got the rainbow pack of wires but the above is the cheapest way to go. It took about all of 10 seconds to put the cable together - very easy... They have female-female jumpers which come in handy sometimes too.

They are pretty cool. Have you though of using an IC Clip with the programming leads soldered on it?
I use this method for my SMD AVRs when I can't fit a ISP port on the board. I wll post a picture when I get home.

I did actually - I have a 16-pin clip that I thought of soldering on leads to but saw this and figured it was pretty cheap and made for nice neat and semi-foolproof method of extending the leads.
