New latest copy of VIxen, and my first ever 595 board with the coop parts.

I've tried a couple sequences, but the 595 seems to behave irratically.

Logically either Vixen or the board are insane. Every time the sequence runs something different seems to happen...

Change the parallel port settings in your BIOS to EPP mode.

Set the port to EPP and if you have the option, change it from "Auto" to "Enabled" (see the edit on the last comment in the thread above).
