View Full Version : Getting extra pci parallel port to work (solution?)

Solution that worked for me: Use simple 595 plugin with extra clock pulse widths, and added hex inverter buffers for the signals.

Problem: Like many others, I wanted to add a non-m/b parallel port to use with the Olsen 595. I bought a pci parallel port card, it just didn't work in providing signals that would drive my boards.

I experimented with the Vixen 2 plugins, nothing worked. I went back to vixen 1 and discovered that the simple 595 plugin had the option of extending the clock widths. When the clock pulse was extended to 2 pulses, my pci parallel port card would run a 595 board. However, when I hooked up my three boards, the upper channels ran randomly. Since I didn't have this problem w. the m/b parallel port I didn't think, at the time, to do anything about it, I just figured the extended clock pulses "fell apart" at higher channel count.

This last weekend I thought to try the hex inverter/inverter trick to add extra strength to the pci parallel port card signals (other folks have schematics on this board, I breadboarded mine with 74C04), and now have clean signals coming out of my pci parallel port card to drive all 192 olsen channels.

Thanks to KC for ginning up a vixen 2 plugin for the simple 595 that extends the clock widths like the vixen 1 plugin did. Maybe he'll add that somewhere for folks to grab, if they want it.
