I think if JohnB can program his 16F688 correctly it is the cheapest way to go. I am sure he will be able to sort it out. The reason I bought one is because it will program a 16F688, 18F4525, and a 18F2550. Mostly the 18F2550. The Pickit1 will not do any 18FXXXX and the Picstart Plus will not do a 18F2550. The JDM will do all of them. It worked perfectly on the 18F4525.
I wish I had a board to test my 16F688 but I don't have the time to throw something together right now.
This JDM is $25.00 delivered ($14.99 cost, $10.00 shipping) and that is as cheap as it will get. The others are $100 and $200 without shipping.
Lets see what JohnB comes up with. At any rate you are welcome to send them to me and I will program the IC for you at no cost.
I could not stand it. I wrote a short program to receive an integer (not on the hardware serial port), flash a LED that number of times and send it back to me via serial communications (not on the hardware serial port) at 9600 bps. I complied the HEX file and loaded it using Winpic800 onto the same 16F688 I have been working with, and it worked perfectly.
The only problem with Winpic800 is that it installs in Spanish but after selecting the menu item "Idioma" and changing it to English, it is quite easy to use.
Four steps:
1) Select the device in the upper right corner (both drop down menus)
2) Select your programmer and COM port via Settings>Hardware
2) Open your .HEX file via File>Open
3) Program the IC via Device>Program All.
