Today I'm installing 20AMP receptacles on the outside of the house.... Yesterday I made my backlit "lights to music" sign. It only cost about $25, and it looks great.

Buy a 15 dollar steel frame from home depot, and then buy that white plastic that goes in overhead sunken florescent lights. Cut the white plastic to size, build a "box" that is a few inches deep, slap a back on it. Put lights in and around, and your done. I think this cost about $25 total. Maybe $30.

The one thing I will eventually change, is that I would prefer letters and numbers with no white around them.... but these are the best stickers i could find today, eventually there wont be the white area around the lettering....

More pictures!

Despite the white sticker around the black letters, it is actually perfectly readable...

Nice sign. I plan to work on mine this weekend. I can't decide on using mini's or rope light on the inside. I have a ton of 35 count strings, so that may be my route.

I used 2 13 watt cfl screw in light bulbs. Can't beat the power consumption, 26 watts total.

Just be sure they're the outdoor version of the cfl that will 'start' in the cold.

great sign,

One option migt be to trace the letters onto stick on adhesive and cut the letters out.

I am not sure of the tradename in the US, but the kids use it on their school books and lining drawers.

You could print the letters with your printer, cut them out, and glue stick them to the backing paper of the contact covering sheets (letter in reverse). Cut thru the contact with an exacto knife and then stick the letters to the plastic Fluro sheet in the light box. will look very good.

I have see solid colours, and tinted colours. you could even have a colour tinted Vixen on your lightbox.

If I ever get around to it I plan on building a sign but using clear full sheet labels from Staples.
Its a clear self stick label that you print on using an ink jet printer.
I use them to put labels on wooden boxes I build for a local candy maker (SPUD FUDGE as seen on FoodTv.)
just print in reverse, stick on back of your plastic, spray some acrylic on to protect and your done.
I might consider using a spray adheasive to stick better as the heat from the lights might ??
