View Full Version : Different Chasing method

I was using the chasing lines the other day for the sequence I'm working on (Mannheim's Hallelujah). It works, but, could it also be done a different way? I was thinking that if you could have a 'Chase' button that would open a pop-up and allow you to enter the time index of the start and end of the chase, as well as the start and end channels for the chase. I think that might make it a little easier to program the chase.

Any thoughts?

BTW, I'm no coder so I have no clue if it could be done easily or at all...

I see the "chase line" option in effects in Vix 2, how does it work?
I've tried to use it but not had success.

Press and hold the Control key while you draw a line that spans the channels and event periods you want.

So it does, thanks for the tip.

Ok, now how do you do the chase with decay??? I can't find the thread on it. I know it exists, and I have forgotten how to make it work!...
Thought this would be a good thread to store it on.

You would have to get the decay pattern you want into the clipboard, then go to Effects / Chase lines / Paint from clipboard. The cells that would normally turn on are, instead, the starting place for painting from the clipboard.

OK,...perhaps , if not done already I should take it upon myself to wikitise this information. For my own notes at the very least.

AND if after you establish the start of the chase line with the Ctrl key, release the Ctrl key and hit Shift, it will automatically draw it at 45* angles. ;)

Or you can hold Ctrl and Shift, if you wish.

So I've completed 2 sequences, and now for the first time I'm trying them on my lights. Mostly everything looks pretty good except my chase sequences, that looked good in "adjustable preview" look TERRIBLE in real life.

Do you guys have any tips for how you make good chase sequences? I mean, we are dealing with the physics of light bulbs, and just because a pixel flashes nicely on my screen, doesn't mean the actual bulb (string of lights) will behave that way... know what I mean? For example, if you make the events too short, sometimes the lights wont even turn on (I'm running 25ms resolution).

Anyway, if you guys could just pound out a few key pieces of advice, I would sure appreciate it....I'm kind of using the brute force method at the moment (at it hurts!)

(Mannheim's Hallelujah)

I've selected that one as well, it is LONG (almost 5 minutes), are you shortening it? Would you mind sharing your sequence? Pretty pretty pretty please? I've poured HOURS into this, and I'd love to see what you have come up with, I'm at about minute 1:20 now... 1/4 done, it is a burly song.

I love how it starts, big swells, clearly outstanding syncopation, but then, it kind of just grinds on, with a lot of variations on a theme (pardon my French, but BORING).

Again, pretty please :)

Then you need to cut that part out, plain and simple. If it becomes boring to you then it will be boring and drag on to the viewers too.

I actually wrote about this in my sequencing tips in the wiki.
